When I leave my computer to do something else and come back my modem has dropped out, why?
There are two likely explanations here. Your dialup networking has settings to hang up if idle for more than X minutes. Switch also has idle time-out settings, we do this for a number of reasons. It is there to prevent you from accidentally leaving your computer connected when you are finished, also if everyone just left their computer connected when they were not using it, all the lines would soon be busy and nobody else could get on. The idle time-out for Switch is set at 20 mins.

Browsing is really slow, what is wrong?
This can be caused by a number of factors.
You may have a line problem, even if you can connect at 50k it will go slow if it has a lot of errors occurring. If the modem has an error communicating it will stop and resend the data from scratch, it could be sending the same thing over and over again and not getting anywhere. Sometimes this can be fixed by setting the modem to actually connect slower and reduce the errors.

You just connect as per normal. The dialup number (0198 333 303) is available Australia wide.

I am trying to dial in from my hotel room and it won't work, what's going on?
Normally the telephone system in a hotel is a PBX (jargon for phone switch). Usually there is a number that has to be dialed first to get a line out. You will need to check with the hotel as to what that could be, you then need to set this number in your dialup networking properties. 0198 numbers are new and may not have been allowed through the PBX system yet.

Why can't I get connected, it keeps asking for my password?
This is a common complaint we hear, it is almost always to do with the case of your username or password. When you login it is case sensitive, mostly people use all lower case. It is very easy when typing your username to capitalize the first letter e.g.. 'Username' instead of 'username', I do it often myself.
If you are on a block time plan, you could have simply run out of time.

My modem is always dropping out, it is really annoying, what could it be?
The most common cause of modem problems is the telephone line.
Do you have call waiting enabled, when you recieve another call you would have heard the "beep beep" that lets you know there is another call, this will normally cause your modem to hang up.
56k modems are pushing the phone line way beyond what it was designed to do. You may have trouble at 56k but connect fine at 33.6k as 33.6k is much less demanding of the line. You can request for Telstra to check your line, they do not have to do this and possibly won't as they are only required to get the line working at 2.4k. You have to stand your ground and insist. Sometimes customers tell us that the fault operator will tell them that it would not happen if they were a BigPond customer, this is a lie and they are not allowed to do it, please get their name and let us know about it. Some other things you could try are to make sure you are using the latest drivers for your modem and or firmware. If you need help Switch tech support is well practiced with these types of problems.

How can I have my own homepage?
The first thing to do is to create a page. There are a lot of web page editors to make this easy for you. Use the right tool for the job, some word processing software can do web pages but they generally do not do a very good job of it. There are hundreds of sites on the net to help you create a page. Try some of these:
Yahoo HTML Directory tons here to look at.
You must save your start page as default.html. OK you have created your page now you need to get it onto the web. First let us know so that we create you directory for you, this takes all of 5 mins. Then you will use ftp to get it to our web server, most web editors now have ftp built in. You need to point it to www.swtch.com.au login with your username and password and you will automatically go to your homepage directory. Now you can transfer all your files up to the server.

But I want a domain name e.g.. www.mycompany.com.au.
You simply need to follow the steps above, letting us know that it is to be a domain. You will need to check if the domain is available you can do this here www.inww.com.au just enter the domain you want and it will check it and tell you if it is OK. You then need to provide us with a registered business or company name that includes the domain name you wish to register e.g.. if you want www.acmeproducts.com.au your registered business name can be 'Acme Products' or 'Acme Products and Stuff' but not 'Acme'. What ever is in your domain name must be in your business name. Anyway you provide us with the business name and address details contacts etc. and the registered business number. We will then register the domain for you, you are registered as the owner of the domain and Switch is registered as the tech contact. You ftp your files to www.yourdomain.com.au login with your username and password and you are away.

Does Switch have to register the domain, what if I want to do it myself?
You can do it yourself, but it is quicker and easier if we just do it for you. We don't charge for our time to do this if we are hosting the domain anyway.

I haven't been able to get on for 2 weeks what is going on?
We do get this, but I don't understand it. If you can't get on please do not wait 2 weeks, don't wait one day, call us and let us know. If we don't know about your problem we can't fix it.
